The Difficult Airway Society (DAS) Launches Inaugural Project Grant to Support Formal Evaluation of Second-Generation Supraglottic Airway Devices (SADs) in Accordance with ADEPT (Airway Device Evaluation Project Team) Guidance

August 18, 2016

WAYNE, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 2016-- Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE: TFX), a leading global provider of medical technologies for critical care and surgery, has today announced its support of the Difficult Airway Society with the launch of the first research grant directed to ADEPT Guidance. The research grant, which will be funded by Teleflex and administered by the Difficult Airway Society, will support the evaluation of second-generation SADs.

While there are both national and international regulations governing the marketing and sale of airway management devices, until now there has been little formal guidance relating to their selection. The ADEPT Guidance is a proposed professional standard that was developed by the Airway Device Evaluation Project Team of the DAS in 2011 to establish a process of formal product evaluation for airway management devices to support purchasing decisions.1 ADEPT Guidance emphasizes evidence-based principles and defines a minimum level of evidence needed to make pragmatic decisions about the purchase or selection of an airway device. To date, no airway management devices have been specifically evaluated in accordance with ADEPT Guidance.

“This inaugural DAS research grant marks the first time ADEPT guidance has been specifically adopted in the evaluation of airway management products,” said Michelle Fox, RN, BSN, Vice President, Clinical and Medical Affairs, Teleflex. “As a leading global provider of innovative airway management solutions, Teleflex welcomes high caliber product testing and evaluation and is proud to be supporting this DAS initiative by way of a research grant.”

The terms of the grant provide that all discoveries resulting from work supported by the grant are to be made available to the public and scientific community through approved scientific channels such as national meetings and peer-reviewed publications.
